You can imagine Google Shopping as a guide in a big online mall. In this mall each store gives him a list of their products. And when shoppers tell him what they want, he shows them relevant products from these lists. But he does more than that. He can also answer questions about products, compare their prices, and even share reviews from other shoppers. Eventually, when customer decides to see the product in store, the guide will not only show the way, but take them straight to the shelf where this product is.

If you’re eager to know how to use Google Shopping, you need to learn how it works first.
Google Shopping has free (also called organic) and paid product listings. As you may have guessed, the key difference is the price. You can sell on Google for free, but if you want Google to promote your goods, you have to pay each time a user clicks on your ad. How much, you ask? Unfortunately, there are no fixed rates; the prices vary based on competition. You can expect to pay between 0.45$ to 0.86$ per click on average.
Now you’re likely wondering: “But how do I get my products on Google Shopping?” Google Shopping has two platforms for businesses who want to sell with Google: Google Merchant Center and Google Ads.
Google Merchant Center is where all the magic happens. Here you give Google information about your business and upload your product feeds. Google will show the products you add to your Merchant Center on free listings.
Google Ads is where you create paid marketing campaigns. Google will show sponsored ads on its search results and partner websites, such as YouTube, Play Store and Gmail. After you link your Merchant Center with your Google Ads account, you can use products from the Merchant Center in your campaigns.
Let’s continue our example with the virtual mall. Your store can join the mall for free. You use the Merchant Center to give the mall’s guide a list of your products. The guide will show your products to shoppers looking for similar goods, asking nothing in return.
Later on you decide to start a marketing campaign. You choose the products you want to promote from your Merchant Center and create a campaign on Google Ads. The guide checks your campaign and agrees to cooperate, but in exchange you must pay him for every shopper he brings to your store through this campaign. The guide will then recommend your relevant products to shoppers more actively. However, the guide will always honestly tell the shopper that he was paid to promote these products.
Google also knows the importance of images, which is why Google Shopping ads are right at the top of SERP. Here Google can display both free and paid listings. But shoppers will always know the difference: paid listings come under the “Ad” or “Sponsored” label.
Google can also show ads in search results. Those look like ordinary search results, but they also have the “Ad” or “Sponsored” label. Google search ads usually appear at the top of SERP, right under Shopping ads.
Only then Google lists organic search results. But no two SERPs are alike. Sometimes Google Shopping ads may appear on the right side of SERP instead of the top. At times Google can squeeze in more Shopping ads between organic results on the first SERPs. In some cases Google can also show more search ads at the bottom of SERP.
With millions of available offers, it’s hard for Google to fit them all on one SERP. Which is why Google integrates Shopping tools in the SERP when people search for products. With the filter panel on the left of SERP, shoppers can clarify what they want and immediately leave only relevant search results.
But Google SERPs can’t offer the same shopping experience as the official Google Shopping platform. Luckily, shoppers can continue their search on Google Shopping right from SERP. They simply have to open the “Shopping” tab, which would usually look like this:
